In Kidnapped the Appin murder is a mere ghmpse ; in Catriona the story is deeply involved with the trial which followed it and with the personages which figured in this piece of the aftermath of the '45 in the Highlands. It is historical in a much larger measure and closer relation than the tale of which it is the continuation ; it depends so much less on the element of excitement, and so much more on its drawings of people, that the two scarcely make a homogeneous work.

Der Protagonist Keawe, ein hawaiischer Matrose, erwirbt eine mysteriöse Flasche, die ihrem Besitzer jeden Wunsch erfüllt. Dieser muss sie jedoch vor seinem Tod verkaufen, um nicht in die Hölle zu kommen. Weiterhin kann die Flasche nur billiger als ihr Einkaufspreis und nur gegen Münzen verkauft werden, ansonsten kehrt sie zu ihrem Besitzer zurück. Nachdem Keawe sich ein schönes Haus gewünscht hat, verkauft er die Flasche an seinen Freund Lopaka. Einige Zeit später trifft er seine große Liebe Kokua, stellt jedoch kurz darauf fest, dass er an der unheilbaren Krankheit Lepra leidet.
